and while we're there
Also from the ABC site:

Brisbane needs detention centre: Ruddock

Immigration Minister Philip Ruddock says Brisbane's popularity as a tourist destination means it needs an immigration detention centre.

He is meeting residents from the suburb of Pinkenba, who are opposed to the 200-bed facility.

Earlier today, he faced angry opposition from a refugee support group which protested outside a Liberal Party function.

But the Minister says with about 43 per cent of all tourists in Australia arriving in Brisbane, the city needs a detention centre.

[...]

So what does this mean, that detention centres are now tourist attractions?

unsatisfied
The ABC website has a bunch of articles with headings like Howard welcomes Amrozi's conviction and Victims' families welcome Amrozi's conviction and even McCartney welcomes Amrozi sentence (footballer Jason McCartney, not ex-Beatle Sir Paul). I'd just like to say that I don't welcome Amrozi's sentence: the death penalty is merely state-authorised murder and is wrong. Wrong in all cases, for all crimes.

The death penalty is wrong.

little earthquakes
Between August 2001 and April 2002 I lived in no less than eight address, spread across 2 states and about 6 postcodes. Now, due to the desire of my current soon-to-be-former housemate to live alone, I'm moving again.

*sigh*

I don't have a clue where to yet, I only got the news tonight. But in a town of four and a half thousand people and around two thousand houses, you'd guess my options are limited. I could seek government accommodation, or GEHA (Government Employees Housing Authority), through my current employer, but I tried that some time ago and it came to naught. Or the's the block of flats. The block of flats, just one.

Stay tuned.

what have I done?
I think I may have created a monster. A couple of years ago I put out an issue of a fanzine I jokingly titled both No Award and Nullarbor Aardvark. It was a joke, but because I didn't really have my stuff all together I only managed to print about 8 copies. Preparing for SwanCon this year I produced Issue #2 and chose to go with the title No Award.

I figured I'd be able to churn out maybe 30 copies a few times a year, give them away, maybe get bought a few beers in the process. But no, the world has to deal me a cruel blow by making people out there want copies! I'm had at least 2 emails in the last week hounding me for copies, something I was never quite prepared to deal with. Potential contributors are asking about deadlines! This way lies madness; it'll snowball out of hand and instead of being able to play on my computer a couple of nights before a con, I'll be forced to deal with having to plan things. People will start to notice what I've done and then it'll start getting onto award ballots -- ballots I'm altogether prepared to lose but I'd rather not have to deal with the concept anyway.

There's a lot of good stuff around in the Australia SF world right now, and what I'm doing is just a bit of fun, a joke. Heck, when I have stories good enough to send out I'll sure as hell start along way from No Award.
