my daddy was a bank robber but he never hurt nobody
A few years ago, a Western Australian Building Society put up a series of billboard ads with slogans like, "Leave your bank! They won't notice (from Sydney)" and the like. Well, their new one should be:
Leave your building society! (Before they leave you.)
because a couple of weeks ago they announced they were closing down their Narrogin sub-branch.
I just wonder which clown came up with that idea. Imagine, you've got a good local interest with all the new customers that will sign up because you've got a presence in a small community, all the parents that will open accounts for their children. Then you shut the branch down, force all the people who trust their money in you to do their banking at the post office, who are already understaffed and over worked. I don't believe there's a mention of this in the guide to making friends.
The trouble is that financial institutions just aren't interested in people anymore. They want organisations who want to get into large debts requiring large and frequent repayments. Want to post another record profit, just up the fees charged to ordinary people and sack a couple of thousand people. Then go home, kick your children and mistreat your dog in the luxury of your riverfront/beachfront property.
Simple. See, I understand how stupid capitalists think. I must be a good socialist in this life so I can fuck over the little people next time around.

truth is out of style
Today I had an experience so bizarre I just have to share it.
Walking home today I found five pennies. Real life, honest to goodness pre-decimal currency just lying there on the streets of Narrogin (well, when I say lying there, one was on a bench, three were in a park but one was on the strip next to the road). Two date back to 1942, two from 1964 and one from 1967 (which is damn weird in itself cause I thought we had decimal currency by then).
It gets weirder. Taped to each penny was a folded piece of paper, which, when opened, contained bible verses and other religions comment. Proverbs 3:5, Job 29:4-5, Acts 12:5, 1 Corinthians 10:12, it goes on. One even has an advert for bumper stickers for the local christian radio station.
It's days like this that make me want to do drugs: reality is too weird. Now if they'd taped a twenty to each slip I'd be a bit more inclined to listen.

ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
Spent the arfternoon putting together a timetable that will allow me to write, work, eat, do the Ticonderoga website, do the Narrogin Ag Society website, study and, most importantly, spend quality time with my wonderful girlfriend. Will, if I get bored enough, put it on the web at some point.

autumn soon
Within 6 hours of the "official" end of the Australian summer (i.e. the end of the international one-day cricket finals) I'm back reading avidly the ALF site.

how do you sleep?
I sometimes have trouble sleeping. All those thoughts I never seem to have during the day come rushing towards me the minute I lay horizontal with my eyes closed. To combat this, and ensure I never think, I often have a cup on camomile tea before bed. It's good stuff, and I do often sleep better after a cup of that otherwise not-so-pleasant liquid.
So here I am, awake, waiting for the cup to cool suficiently for me to drink it. I'm having a late night waiting for the tea to help me sleep better. There's gotta be some logic there.
